Hadith 12687

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) extended the Prophet’s Mosque from the well-known pillar to the enclosure (stone), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also extended it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I had not heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that we wish to expand our mosque, I would not have expanded it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu undertook the reconstruction of the Prophet’s Mosque, despite the abundance of conquests and spoils of war, he maintained simplicity, just as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had established as its foundation. Later, Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu, during his era, adopted some adornment in the mosque, which is possible that it was less than excessiveness and the prohibited forms of decoration. Nevertheless, some of the Companions did object to him in this matter. The very first person to embellish mosques was Walid ibn Abd al-Malik; this was the last era of the Companions, and most of the scholars remained silent out of fear of tribulation.
