Hadith 12683

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the place of Masjid Nabawi was owned by Banu Najjar. There were date palm trees and graves of polytheists in it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Set a price for this plot with me." They said: "We will not take its price." And when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was constructing it, and those people were handing things to him for the construction, at that time the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting these verses: "Behold! The real life is the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajirin." Before the construction of Masjid Nabawi, whenever the time for prayer would come, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the prayer wherever he was.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had settled in Madinah Munawwarah, his first step in this regard was that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam began the construction of the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi). For this, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam purchased the land where his camel had sat down; this was the property of two orphan children, approximately one hundred cubits long and one hundred cubits wide. There were some graves of polytheists on it, some wasteland, and a few date-palm and gharqad trees. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had the graves removed, the wasteland cleared, and the trees and date-palms cut down and planted them towards the qiblah. The walls were raised with mud and unbaked bricks, the two sides of the door were made of stone, the roof was made of palm branches and the beams of palm trunks, and sand and pebbles were spread on the floor. The mosque had three doors. The qiblah was to the north, towards Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem); later, the Ka‘bah was made the qiblah.
