Hadith 12682

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) has also narrated a hadith of this meaning, however, in it are these words: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is this very mosque of mine.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Although both the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi) and the Mosque of Quba (Masjid Quba) were founded upon piety (taqwa), the point of difference here is regarding which mosque is being referred to in the following verse: {لَمَسْجِدٌ اُسِّسَ عَلَی التَّقْوٰی مِنْ اَوَّلِ یَوْمٍ اَحَقُّ اَنْ تَقُوْمَ فِیْہِ فِیْہِ رِجَالٌ یُّحِبُّوْنَ اَنْ یَّتَطَہَّرُوْا وَاللّٰہُ یُحِبُّ الْمُطَّہِّرِیْنَ۔} … “Certainly, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day upon piety is more worthy that you stand therein. In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.” (Surah al-Tawbah: 108) From these hadiths, it appears that the mosque founded upon piety refers to the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi), but the majority of scholars are of the opinion that the mosque mentioned in the verse refers to the Mosque of Quba (Masjid Quba), and the apparent meaning of the verse and its context also support this.

The truth is that both mosques were founded upon piety. The final words of this verse, “In it are men…” support the view that the verse refers to the Mosque of Quba. In the narration of Sunan Abu Dawud, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that “In it are men…” was revealed concerning the people of Quba.

Therefore, the secret in the response of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would be that he wished to remove the misconception that only the Mosque of Quba is such a mosque whose foundation was laid upon piety. And Allah knows best. (Summary from Fath al-Bari and Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi)
