Hadith 1267

A hadith similar to this is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) through another chain, and in it, there is further mention of this matter. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the call to prayer (adhan) to be given. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), used to call the adhan with these same words and would call the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for prayer. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid says: One day, Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went to call you for the Fajr prayer in the morning, and he was told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sleeping, so Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) loudly proclaimed: "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep). Sa'id bin al-Musayyib says: So these words were included in the adhan for Fajr. (1267)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This dream is a natural felicity (sa‘adat) of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zayd radi Allahu anhu and Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu; these are true dreams. Such dreams have been described in various hadiths as being a twenty-fifth, forty-sixth, or seventeenth part of prophethood. There is no contradiction in these wordings; the real issue is that this difference relates to the dreamer himself: the more pious a person is, the truer his dream will be.

The wording of the narration in Abu Dawud is as follows: ((He said: When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered for a bell to be made so that it could be struck for the people to gather for prayer, I was taken around while I was asleep.)) That is, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zayd says: When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that a bell (naqus) be made so that people could be gathered for prayer, I saw in a dream that … From this hadith, it is understood that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had only given the order to make the bell; it had not yet been struck when Allah Ta‘ala created the means for the legislation of the adhan.

It is remarkable that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zayd radi Allahu anhu was granted the honor of a true dream, yet Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu was chosen to give the adhan. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself explained the reason, saying: ((Indeed, it is a true dream, insha’Allah. So stand with Bilal and convey to him what you have seen, so that he may give the adhan with it, for he has a more resonant voice than you.)) That is: Insha’Allah, this is a true dream. Stand with Bilal and impart to him the words of this dream, so that he may give the adhan, for he has a louder voice than you … … . (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah)

From this hadith, it is understood that the muezzin (mu’adhdhin) should be one with a beautiful and loud voice. In a narration of Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, it is mentioned that the voice of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah radi Allahu anhu greatly pleased the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught him the adhan. However, nowadays, in most mosques, this matter is not considered at all.

The beginning of “al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm” (prayer is better than sleep) in the Fajr adhan started in the blessed era of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam itself; its details will come ahead.
