Hadith 12663

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have been commanded to migrate to a town which will consume all other towns, that is, it will surpass all in virtue and rank. People call it Yathrib, but it is Madinah. It will expel the hypocrites and wicked people just as a furnace removes impurities from iron.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … According to some other hadiths as well, the mention of Yathrib occurred in the gathering of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. From this hadith, there is a slight indication of dislike (karahah) that one should not call Madinah "Yathrib"; rather, one should call it "Tābah," "Tayyibah," or "Madinah." In fact, "Yathrib" is derived from "tathrīb," which means rebuke, reprimand, and blame, whereas the words "Tābah" and "Tayyibah" possess beauty; their meanings are purity, excellence, and pleasantness.
