(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), accepted Islam, and pledged allegiance to you (peace and blessings be upon him) on migration. Only a short time had passed when he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Return my pledge of allegiance to me, ..." Then the rest of the narration was mentioned.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “I have been commanded regarding a town that consumes (overcomes) other towns. They call it Yathrib, but it is al-Madinah. It expels people just as the bellows expels the impurities of iron.” And in another narration from him through other chains, marfu‘, with the wording: “A time will come upon people when a man will call his paternal cousin and his close relative, saying: ‘Come to prosperity! Come to prosperity!’ But Madinah is better for them, if only they knew. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no one leaves it out of dislike for it except that Allah will bring someone better than him in his place. Be aware! Madinah is like the bellows, it expels the impure. The Hour will not be established until Madinah expels its wicked people just as the furnace expels the impurities of iron.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 4/69-70, Sahih Muslim: 9/154)
In this, the virtues of the inhabitants of Madinah are mentioned; they too should prove themselves even greater, given that their place of refuge is so great. Imam al-Albani rahimahullah says: (Ummirtu bi-qaryah): The Khatib said: Its meaning is that I have been commanded to migrate to a village.
(Ta’kul al-qura): Its meaning is that the people of this town will overcome the people of other towns.
Imam al-Albani rahimahullah says: It appears that this hadith is related to the time of the Dajjal, as is in Sahih Muslim, that when the Dajjal will intend Madinah, Madinah will shake three times violently, and Allah will expel every disbeliever and hypocrite from it (towards that Dajjal), (because the Dajjal will not be able to enter Madinah). This narration is also in Sahih Bukhari.
From this, it is understood that the virtue of being patient in residing in Madinah was, firstly, specific to the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as is evident from the following hadith about the Bedouin:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu that a Bedouin pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam upon Islam, but he became ill with fever in Madinah. He came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: O Messenger of Allah! Return my pledge to me. The Prophet refused. He came a second time and said: Return my pledge to me. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam refused. He came a third time and said: Return my pledge to me. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam refused. (Ultimately, despite not being granted permission) the Bedouin left Madinah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Madinah is like the bellows and the furnace; it expels the impure and refines the pure. (Sahihah: 217)
Reflect! The statement of Allah the Exalted is: {وَمِنْ اَھْلِ الْمَدِیْنَۃِ مَرَدُوْا عَلَی النِّفَاقِ} (Surah al-Tawbah: 101) … And among the people of Madinah are those who persist in hypocrisy.
Without doubt, the hypocrite is impure, even if he resides in Madinah. Therefore, in these ahadith, where it is said that Madinah expels the impure, this is not continuous (istimraran), but rather repetitive (takraran). Once, it occurred in the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and it will occur again in the era of the Dajjal. (Sahihah: 218)
