Hadith 12633

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) fell ill. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), his servant Sayyiduna Amir bin Fuhairah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) also fell ill. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to visit them, and he granted her permission. So she went and said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): How are you? He replied: Every man is wished a good morning among his family, while death is closer to him than the strap of his sandal. Then she asked Sayyiduna Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) about his condition, and he said: I am tasting death even before it comes; indeed, death falls upon the coward from above him. When Sayyidah asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) about his condition, he said: I wish I knew on which night I would reach the valley of Fubh near Makkah and spend the night there, and the Idhkhir bush and Jalil grass of that place would be around me. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of their conditions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky and made this supplication: O Allah! Just as You have placed the love of Makkah in our hearts, place the love of Madinah in our hearts, or even more than that. O Allah! Bless us in the Sa’ and Mudd of this place, and transfer its disease to Mahya’ah. The scholars say: By Mahya’ah is meant the place of Juhfah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The fever found in the region of Madinah Munawwarah was well-known, to the extent that during the ‘Umrah of Qada, while the Companions were performing tawaf, the polytheists of Makkah said about them that the fever of Yathrib (Madinah) had weakened them. For this reason, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered them to perform raml (walking briskly with short steps during tawaf). On one hand, the Companions had the natural sorrow in their hearts of leaving their ancestral homeland, Makkah Mukarramah, and on the other hand, they were afflicted by the fever prevalent in the city to which they had come. It was on this basis that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhuma recited these verses of poetry. Then, by the blessing of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplication, the Muslims found relief from illnesses and Madinah became beloved to them.

At that time, Juhfah was a center of shirk (polytheism), so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated for the fever of Madinah to be transferred to Juhfah, so that those people would remain afflicted by this fever and would not be able to assist the disbelievers and the rebellious. After this supplication, the most fever was found in that area, to the extent that if anyone drank water from the place of Juhfah, he would be stricken with fever.
