And from them, through another chain of narration, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When Satan hears the muezzin giving the call to prayer, he flees, passing wind, so far that he cannot hear the call. When the muezzin finishes, he returns and begins to cast whispers. Then, when the muezzin begins the iqamah, Satan does the same (i.e., he flees).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The reason for this state of the Shaytan is intense fear and awe, and it is also possible that he deliberately adopts this state in order to ignore the words of the adhan or to show disrespect towards the adhan. The Shaytan’s effort is to confuse the worshipper in his prayer. When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As radi Allahu anhu presented this very complaint regarding the Shaytan’s whisperings before the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: This Shaytan is called Khanzab. When you sense him, seek refuge with Allah and spit three times to your left. I did so, and Allah Almighty removed him from me. (Muslim: 2203) It is thus understood that when the Shaytan tries to cast whisperings during prayer, one should recite: a‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan) and spit three times to the left.
