Hadith 12603

عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ لَمَّا رَكَضَ زَمْزَمَ بِعَقِبِهِ جَعَلَتْ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ تَجْمَعُ الْبَطْحَاءَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”رَحِمَ اللَّهُ هَاجَرَ أُمَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، لَوْ تَرَكَتْهَا لَكَانَتْ مَاءً مَعِينًا.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Jibreel (peace be upon him) pressed his heel to bring forth the water of Zamzam, the mother of Isma'il (peace be upon him) began to gather it by making a basin in the open valley. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il, Hajar; if she had left the water as it was, it would have become a flowing spring.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Zamzam water is an extremely blessed water, and according to the Prophetic hadith, it suffices in place of food as well. How and when did this water originate? This hadith provides the answer to this question.
