Sayyiduna Uwais bin Abu Uwais Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He says, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the delegation of Thaqif. We were in a tent. It so happened that all the people left except me and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile, a man came and whispered something to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go and kill him." In one narration it is stated: When that man was about to leave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and asked: "Does he bear witness to «لاَإِلَهَإِلَّااللَّهُ»?" He said: "Yes, but he only says this statement to save himself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him." In another narration it is stated: "Go and let him go." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say «لاَإِلَهَإِلَّااللَّهُ»; when they say this statement, their blood and wealth become forbidden for me, except by right." I (Muhammad bin Ja'far) said to Imam Shu'bah: Were the words of the hadith not such that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked whether he bears witness to «لاَإِلَهَإِلَّااللَّهُوَأَنِّيرَسُولُاللَّهِ»? He said: I think these words were also there, but now I do not remember.
