(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the conquest of Makkah: This city is sacred; Allah Almighty declared it sacred on the very day He created the heavens and the earth. It will remain a sanctuary until the Day of Resurrection. For everyone before me and after me, until the Day of Resurrection, it is now sacred. Allah Almighty has declared it a sanctuary until the Day of Resurrection. Its thorns are not to be cut, its grass is not to be uprooted, its game is not to be frightened, and nothing fallen here is to be picked up, except by one who intends to announce it. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a resident of Makkah and was aware of the needs of its people, said: O Messenger of Allah! Grant permission for the cutting of the Idhkhir grass, as it is a necessity for graves and houses. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, permission is granted to cut Idhkhir grass. In another narration, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This Idhkhir is needed for people’s houses, and blacksmiths and goldsmiths use it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Permission is granted to cut Idhkhir. He also said: Now migration from Makkah is no longer possible, but the intention for jihad and migration remains; whenever there is a need, we will set out for migration or jihad, and when you are called upon to go out for jihad, then rise up.
