Hadith 12550

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muti’, who says: On the day of the conquest of Makkah, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: From today until the Day of Resurrection, no Quraishi will be killed while being bound. Among the sinners of the Quraish, that is, those named ‘Asi, none except this Muti’ became Muslim, and this companion’s name was also ‘Asi. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, changed his name to Muti’.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: The scholars are of the opinion that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) intended to inform regarding the Quraysh that all of them would embrace Islam and none among them would apostatize, as happened with individuals from non-Qurayshi tribes who became apostates and were then fought against. The meaning of this hadith is not that no Qurayshi will ever be killed unjustly, because such treatment has indeed occurred with the Quraysh. And Allah knows best. (Sharh Muslim Nawawi: 12/134)

In this hadith, the word ‘Asi is a proper noun, not an adjective, and its plural is ‘Usat. The meaning of the last part of this narration is that in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), many people were named ‘Asi, for example: ‘Asi bin Wa’il Sahmi, ‘Asi bin Hisham, ‘Asi bin Sa‘id bin ‘As, ‘Asi bin Hisham bin Mughirah, ‘Asi bin Munabbih bin Hajjaj, ‘Asi bin Aswad.

None of these individuals named ‘Asi became Muslim, except for the last mentioned, i.e., ‘Asi bin Aswad, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed his name to Muti‘. The literal meaning of ‘Asi is “disobedient,” so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave this companion the name Muti‘, which means “obedient.”

‘Asi and ‘Asi (with ya) are the same word; in the Arabic language, in some constructions it is read as ‘Asi and in others as ‘Asi (with ya).
