It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Mirdas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made many supplications for forgiveness and mercy for his Ummah on the evening of Arafah. Allah Almighty said: I have accepted your supplications and I have forgiven your Ummah, except that if anyone among the people wrongs another, this crime will not be forgiven. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O my Lord! You are able to forgive the oppressor and grant the oppressed recompense from Yourself equal to the oppression he suffered. That night only this much happened. When the next day came and you (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Muzdalifah in the morning, you again made supplications for your Ummah. Suddenly, you (peace and blessings be upon him) began to smile. A companion said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, you have smiled at a time when you do not usually smile. May Allah keep you smiling, what is the reason for this smile? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I smiled at the condition of Allah’s enemy, Iblis. When he found out that Allah Almighty had accepted my supplication for my Ummah and had promised to forgive even the oppressor, he began to raise his hands and lament his destruction and ruin, and started throwing dust on his head. So I smiled at his distress and anxiety.
