It is narrated from Shuraih bin Ubaid, he says: In Homs, Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. At that time, the governor there was Abdullah bin Qurt Azdi. He did not come to visit him. When a man from the tribe of Banu Kila’ came to visit Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), he said to him: Do you know how to write? He replied: Yes. He said: Write. Then he dictated this letter: From Thawban, the servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), to the governor Abdullah bin Qurt. To proceed! If there had been a servant of Musa or Isa (peace be upon them) in your region, you would certainly have gone to visit him in his illness. Then he wrapped up the letter and said: Will you deliver this letter to Abdullah? He said: Yes. So when that man went and gave the letter to Abdullah bin Qurt and he read it, he stood up in fear. The people said: What happened to him? Has some accident occurred? He went to the service of Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), visited him, and sat with him for a while. After that, when he got up to leave, Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) held his sheet and said: Sit down, I will tell you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Seventy thousand people from my Ummah will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment, and in addition to this, with every thousand of them, there will be seventy more people.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Seventy thousand, and with each thousand, seventy thousand—this totals four million nine hundred seventy thousand (4,970,000) individuals from the ummah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who will inherit Paradise without any reckoning or questioning. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Many nations were shown to me; I saw that with some prophets there was a very large group, and with some prophets there was only one or two men, and I even saw a prophet with whom there was no one. Suddenly, a great multitude appeared before me; I thought that this would be my ummah, but it was said to me that this is Musa alayhis salam and his people.
After that, I saw an even greater number; I was told: "This is your ummah, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment." … This is your ummah, and among your ummah are seventy thousand individuals who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.
After narrating this incident, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went home. The noble Companions began to speculate among themselves about these seventy thousand. Some said that these are the people who had the honor of the company of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Some Companions said that these would be those who were born in Islam and never associated anything with Allah. Besides this, the Companions gave other explanations as well.
When the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned, the Companions expressed their various opinions. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "They are those who do not seek ruqyah (spiritual healing), nor do they cauterize themselves, nor do they take omens, and upon their Lord they rely." (Bukhari, Muslim)
In this blessed hadith, the prominent characteristics of those who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment are mentioned: they never indulged in any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah), nor did they present even their smallest needs before anyone other than Allah; they even refrained from seeking ruqyah and cauterization. The greatest reason for this was their trust and reliance upon Allah; they presented their difficulties only before Allah, and their attention was not towards anyone except Allah’s decree and destiny. They turned only and only to Allah, feared none but Him, and their belief was that whatever difficulties arise, they come by Allah’s decree and His will. Therefore, in times of hardship and difficulty, they would call only upon Allah, as Allah has said in the Qur’an regarding Yaqub alayhis salam: {قَالَ اِنَّمَا اَشْکُوْ بَثِّیْ وَ حُزْنِیْ اِلَی اللّٰہِ} (Surah Yusuf: 86) … He said: "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah alone."
The greatest number of those who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment is mentioned in the following hadith. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "I have been given seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning; their faces will shine like the full moon on the night of Badr, and their hearts will be like the heart of a single man. I then asked my Lord for more, so He granted me with each one an additional seventy thousand." Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu said: "I think this will reach the people of the towns and extend to the outskirts of the villages." (Musnad Ahmad: 1/6, Sahihah: 1484)
According to this hadith, four billion, ninety million, and seventy thousand (4,090,070,000) individuals will enter Paradise without reckoning. (Subhan Allah) O Allah! Take care of us as well; Your mercy and grace are far beyond our imagination.
However, in the following hadith, the vastness of Allah’s mercy is even more apparent:
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah Bahili radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "My Lord, Glorified is He, has promised me that He will admit into Paradise from my ummah seventy thousand without reckoning or punishment, and with every thousand, seventy thousand more, and in addition to that, three handfuls from the handfuls of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic." (Ibn Majah: 4276) Allah knows how many of the followers of Muhammad will fit in His handfuls.
