Hadith 12473

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this Ummah had two guarantees from Allah. Now, one of those guarantees has been taken away, and the other still remains. Regarding these two types of protection, Allah Almighty has said: {وَمَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ لِیُعَذِّبَہُمْ وَأَنْتَ فِیہِمْ وَمَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ مُعَذِّبَہُمْ وَہُمْ یَسْتَغْفِرُونَ} … And Allah will not punish them while you are among them, and Allah will not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There were two reasons for security and safety from the punishment of Allah Ta‘ala: one was the presence of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and the other was seeking forgiveness (istighfar). With the passing of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), one reason has come to an end, and the reason of seeking forgiveness remains. From this verse, the importance of seeking forgiveness (istighfar) becomes evident.
