Hadith 12453

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the house of a Kufan, and that person began to tell him some things about Mukhtar. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that before the Day of Judgment, thirty great liars (Dajjals) will appear.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, in Thaqif there will be a great liar and a destroyer.” This has been narrated from Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq, Abdullah ibn Umar, and Salamah bint al-Hurr al-Ja‘fiyyah. From Asma, it is narrated that she said to al-Hajjaj: “Be aware! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed us: ‘Indeed, in Thaqif there will be a great liar and a destroyer.’” She said: “As for the liar, we have seen him. As for the destroyer, I do not think it is anyone but you.” In the tribe of Thaqif, there will be a liar and a destroyer (i.e., one who causes destruction). This hadith is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar, and Sayyidah Salamah bint al-Hurr al-Ja‘fiyyah. It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma radi Allahu anha that she said to al-Hajjaj: “Be aware! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed us that in the tribe of Thaqif there will be a liar and a destroyer. The liar we have seen; as for the destroyer, I only think that it is you.” (See: Muslim: 7/190, 191; Tirmidhi: 2220 & 3944; Ahmad: 2/26, 87, 91, 92; Sahihah: 3538)

The name of the ancestor of the Hawazin tribe was Qasi ibn Munabbih ibn Bakr ibn Hawazin, who was called Thaqif. (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: 3/227)

Imam Tirmidhi, after narrating this hadith, said: “It is said that the liar refers to Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd and the destroyer refers to al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf,” meaning: It is said that by “the liar” is meant Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd, and by “the destroyer” is meant al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf.

Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd claimed that Jibril (Gabriel) al-Amin used to come to him. As for al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, his evil deeds in slaughtering Muslims and putting them to death were unmatched.

In this hadith, mention is made of thirty liars; their details are as follows:

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the Seal of the Prophets (Khatam an-Nabiyyin); after him, no prophet has come nor will come, and whoever claims such is a liar, a great liar (kadhdhab), and a Dajjal.

It should be kept in mind that by this hadith are not meant those claimants of prophethood who made a general claim to prophethood, for such people are many. The thirty liars mentioned in the ahadith are those wretches who, due to their claim, gained prominence and grandeur, and they themselves began to have real doubt about their own prophethood, and a considerable number of people also followed them. For example, the case of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani.

Imam al-Albani rahimahullah says: Among those Dajjals who claimed prophethood is Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani al-Hindi, who, during the era of British colonialism in India, claimed that he was the Mahdi, then made people believe he was ‘Isa (Jesus) alayhis salam, and finally claimed prophethood. Many ignorant people, lacking knowledge of the Qur’an and Sunnah, followed him. I met such people from India and Syria who believed in his prophethood. There were many debates and discussions between me and them, one of which was even in writing. In these debates, their claim was that their belief is that after the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, many prophets will come, and among them is Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani. In the beginning, they tried to mislead and distract from the main topic of the debate, but I rejected their tricks and remained firm on the main subject. Thus, they suffered a humiliating defeat, and those present realized that this is a people upon falsehood.

Some of their other beliefs are also false and contrary to the consensus (ijma‘) of the Ummah. For example: denying bodily resurrection and saying that Paradise and Hell are related to the soul, not the body; that the punishment given to disbelievers will eventually cease; that jinn do not exist, and that the jinn mentioned in the Qur’an are actually a group of humans.

When these people find a verse of the Qur’an contrary to their beliefs, they interpret it in an unacceptable and rejected manner, just like the Batiniyyah and Qaramitah, which are false sects. For this reason, the British used to support and assist them against the Muslims. Mirza Qadiani used to say that it is forbidden for Muslims to fight the British. I have authored several books in refutation of them, in which I have clarified that this sect is outside the Jama‘at al-Muslimin. They should be studied. (Sahihah: 1683)
