It is narrated from Bishr bin Harb that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: I have been informed that before the people agreed upon the leadership of one leader, you pledged allegiance to two leaders? He said: Yes, I had pledged allegiance at the hand of Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), then the Syrians came and took me towards the army of Ibn Dillah, so I pledged allegiance to him as well. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I feared this, I was afraid of this. While uttering these words, Hammad bin Salamah prolonged and stretched his voice. Abu Sa'id said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! Did you not hear that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that if any of you has the ability that he should neither begin the morning nor the evening without being under the leadership of an amir, then he must enter into the leadership of someone? He said: Yes, but I do not like that before the people agree upon the leadership of one leader, I pledge allegiance to two leaders.
