Hadith 12431

It is narrated from Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said one day: What will be your condition at that time, when corruption will arise in the religion, inclination towards evil will replace goodness, discord will occur among brothers, and the House of Allah will be set on fire.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The rule of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubair radi Allahu anhu in Makkah al-Mukarramah was established immediately after the death of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu, and during the reign of Yazid, he never allowed Yazid’s authority to be established over Makkah. After Yazid’s death, he took the pledge of allegiance (bay‘ah) for the caliphate from the people, and very soon, along with some regions of Syria, he was recognized as the caliph throughout the entire Islamic world.

After completing the incident of Harrah, Muslim ibn Uqbah set out with his army towards Makkah to confront Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubair radi Allahu anhu. On the way, he fell ill and, appointing Husayn ibn Numayr as commander in his place, died at the location of Abwa. Those who had fled from Madinah also reached Makkah, and on this occasion, the Khawarij also deemed it appropriate to assist Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubair. The people of Hijaz, during the Hajj of that year, pledged allegiance to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubair radi Allahu anhu.

In any case, the army of Syria reached near Makkah, and on the 27th of Muharram, 64 AH, fighting began and continued until the 3rd of Rabi‘ al-Awwal. Although no decisive victory or defeat was determined, the Syrian forces set up catapults and began pelting the Ka‘bah with stones. Balls of cotton, sulfur, and resin were made, set alight, and hurled, which caused the entire covering of the Ka‘bah to burn and its walls to become blackened. The impact of the stones caused the walls of the Ka‘bah to break and the roof to collapse. This was an extremely unpleasant incident during the caliphate of Yazid ibn Muawiyah.
