Mawla-e-Mehri narrates from Abu Saeed that during the incident of Harrah, he went to Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and sought his advice about moving to another place outside Madinah Munawwarah. He complained that he had many dependents and there was a lot of inflation here, so he could not bear the hardship of living here. He (Abu Saeed Khudri) replied: Woe to you, I cannot advise you on this matter, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever among the Muslims bears the difficulties and hardships that occur in Madinah Munawwarah and dies in that state, then I will be an intercessor for him on the Day of Resurrection, or he said: I will be a witness for him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The people who withdrew from the pledge of allegiance (bay‘ah) to Yazid were the inhabitants of Madinah, and as a result of this, the Battle of Harrah took place, which affected the history of the Muslim Ummah.

When Yazid ibn Mu‘awiyah became aware of the actual situation, he said to Muslim ibn ‘Uqbah: Take with you one thousand selected warriors and reach Madinah; call the people towards obedience. If they accept obedience, that is better; otherwise, fight and set everyone straight. In accordance with this command, on the third day this army set out from Damascus. At the time of departure, Yazid advised Muslim: As far as possible, act with gentleness and forgiveness; otherwise, there is general permission for bloodshed and massacre.

The Syrian army reached Madinah al-Munawwarah and invited the people to pledge allegiance, but the people of Madinah were prepared for battle. Eventually, Muslim attacked Madinah from the direction of Harrah. The people of Madinah confronted with great bravery and repeatedly turned the Syrian army back, but due to the bravery and experience of Muslim ibn ‘Uqbah, the people of Madinah were defeated. Many leaders of Madinah were killed in the battle; in total, nearly one thousand people were killed, among whom were more than three hundred nobles of Quraysh and Ansar. The victorious army entered Madinah and carried out a massacre for three days. On the fourth day, the order for allegiance was given: whoever pledged allegiance at the hand of Muslim was spared, and whoever refused was killed. This incident took place in Dhu al-Hijjah, in the year 63 AH.
