Hadith 12422

It is narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the head of Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad, and it was placed in a tray. He began striking it with his stick and uttered some inappropriate words about his beauty. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He most closely resembled the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) among all people, and his hair was dyed with wasmah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: According to the statement of most scholars, Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu was born in Sha'ban of the year 4 Hijri, and on the Day of Ashura, that is, the 10th of Muharram in the year 61 Hijri, he was martyred on the land of Iraq at the place of Karbala. The reality of the situation was that when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu passed away and after him Yazid ascended the seat of caliphate, the people of Kufa corresponded with Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu, stating that they would obey him, not Yazid. Thus, Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu set out towards the people of Kufa, but before him, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad reached Kufa and turned most people away from Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu. Some people abandoned Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu out of desire, and some out of fear. Ibn Ziyad also killed Sayyiduna Muslim ibn Aqil radi Allahu anhu, the cousin of Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu, whom he had sent to take the pledge of allegiance from the people. Then Ibn Ziyad prepared an army and began war against Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu, until the grandson of the Messenger and many members of his household were martyred. This is a well-known incident; we do not wish to go into its details. (Fath al-Bari: 7/96)

This is a black stain, which has darkened the history of the Muslim Ummah. The grandson of the Seal of the Prophets sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also became a victim of the oppression of his own Ummah.
