Abdullah bin Naji narrates from his father that he was walking with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), carrying a vessel of water for purification. When they reached the place of Nainawa on their way to Siffin, Sayyiduna Ali called out: "Abu Abdullah! Stop, stop by the bank of the Euphrates River." I asked: "What is here?" He replied: "One day I went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and his eyes were filled with tears. I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah! Has someone angered you? Why are your eyes shedding tears?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Before you arrived, Jibreel Amin had just left me. He informed me that Husayn will be killed by the bank of the Euphrates River.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He (Jibreel) asked: Shall I let you smell the fragrance of its soil?' I said: 'Yes.' So he stretched out his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me. I could not control myself and began to weep."
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith radi Allahu anha that she came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I saw a dreadful dream last night.” He said: ((And what is it?)) She said: “It is very severe.” He said: ((And what is it?)) She said: “I saw as if a piece of your body was cut off and placed in my lap.” He said: ((You have seen something good. Fatimah, insha’Allah, will give birth to a boy who will be in your lap.)) So Fatimah gave birth to al-Husayn, and he was in my lap just as the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had said. One day I went to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and placed him (al-Husayn) in his lap. Then, as I turned my attention away, I saw that the eyes of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam were flowing with tears. She said: I said, “O Prophet of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is the matter with you?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Jibril alayhis salam came to me and informed me that my ummah will kill this son of mine.)) I said: “This one?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Yes. And he brought me some red soil from his (Husayn’s) land.)) … O Messenger of Allah! I saw an ugly dream last night. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked: What is it? She said: It is very severe. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: What is it, after all? She said: I felt as if a piece of your body was cut off and thrown into my lap. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: You have seen a good dream, (its interpretation is that) insha’Allah my daughter Fatimah will have a child who will be in your lap. Indeed, Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha gave birth to Husayn, who was in my lap, just as the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had said. One day I went to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and placed Husayn in his lap. When I turned towards him, tears were flowing from his eyes. I said: O Prophet of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, what has happened to you? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Jibril alayhis salam came to me and informed me that my ummah will kill this son of mine. I said: This son (Husayn)? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Yes, and he brought me some red soil from that land. (al-Mustadrak al-Hakim: 3/176, al-Sahihah: 821)
Nowadays, in relation to the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu, the acts that are being committed or have been introduced into the religion are refuted by these blessed ahadith, because Jibril alayhis salam had made the entire situation of the martyrdom of Husayn radi Allahu anhu clear to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, yet despite this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not add any new ruling to his religion.
The martyrdom of Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu in the field of Karbala is a black stain on the face of the Muslim ummah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, with the cooperation of Sayyiduna Jibril alayhis salam, had already foretold it.
Imam al-Albani rahimahullah says: This type of hadith does not indicate any sanctity of Karbala, nor the virtue of prostrating (sujud) on its soil or on a tablet made from its earth, as the Shia believe. If there were any virtue in such a tablet, it should have been made from the soil of Masjid al-Haram or Masjid al-Nabawi.
In reality, this matter is related to the innovation (bid‘ah) of the Shia and their excessiveness in venerating Ahl al-Bayt and their relics. It is very strange that among these people, reason is also considered one of the sources of Shari‘ah, and on this basis, they believe in rational approval and rational disapproval. Yet, despite this, they try to prove the virtue of prostrating on the soil of Karbala with such narrations that are, according to rational standards, absolutely false. Sayyid ‘Abd al-Rida Mar‘ashi Shahristani has written in his treatise (p. 15) under the title “al-Sujud ‘ala al-Turbah al-Husayniyyah”:
Due to the nobility, sanctity, and purity of the personalities buried there, prostrating on the soil of Karbala is superior. The narrations transmitted from the pure Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt indicate this, for example: Prostrations performed on this (soil) create light up to the seventh earth. These prostrations tear through the seven veils. Allah accepts the prayer of the one who prostrates on this soil in a way He does not accept others. A prostration performed on the soil of Husayn’s grave illuminates the earths.
I (al-Albani) say: The falsehood and rejection of these narrations is obvious. The Imams of Ahl al-Bayt are free from such narrations. There is not a single chain of transmission for them so that they could be examined in the light of the science of hadith and its principles. Some narrations are mursal, others are mu‘dal.
This same Shia author, blackening the pages of his book further, said: The narrations indicating the virtue and sanctity of Husayni soil are not only transmitted from the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt, but are also found with great fame in the foundational books of other Islamic sects. Their scholars and narrators have transmitted them, for example, Imam Suyuti in his book (al-Khasa’is al-Kubra) in the chapter “Akhbar al-Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam bi Qatl al-Husayn alayhis salam” has narrated about twenty narrations from trustworthy authorities such as Imam Hakim, Imam Bayhaqi, Imam Abu Nu‘aym, and Imam Tabari. Similarly, they are also mentioned in Imam Haythami’s (Majma‘ al-Zawa’id: 9/191).
I (al-Albani) say: O Muslim! You should know that neither Imam Suyuti nor Imam Haythami has mentioned a single hadith that indicates the virtue or sanctity of Husayni soil. The ahadith narrated by Ahl al-Sunnah only establish that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam foretold the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu, as I have also mentioned some narrations in this al-Sahihah.
As for the narrations this Shia has claimed, did Suyuti and Haythami narrate them?
By Allah! Never. In reality, this Shia was so eager to support his misguidance and innovation that he even resorted to the weakest of arguments, weaker than a spider’s web.
This Mar‘ashi Shahristani Shia did not suffice with deceiving the readers of his book to this extent, but even dared to lie against the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as he says:
The first person to prostrate on a tablet made from earth was our Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. This was at the time when, in 3 AH, the battle of Uhud took place between the Muslims and the Quraysh, in which the pillar of Islam, Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, was martyred. At that time, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered the Muslim women to lament in every mourning gathering for him, then the honoring of him was increased, and people would take soil from his grave for blessing and would prostrate on it and make places of prostration from it, as is mentioned in (the Shia book) (al-Ard wa al-Turbah al-Husayniyyah).
I (al-Albani) say: Dear readers! Reflect on how this man has attributed such a lie to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and claimed that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the first to make a tablet for prostration. Then he did not present any evidence for his claim. Rather, he presented this lie that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered the women to lament for Sayyiduna Hamzah radi Allahu anhu, even though this order has no connection to the issue of soil, while the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had in fact taken the pledge from women not to wail, as is established from the narration of Sayyidah ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Then he presented a third lie, that the Companions would take soil from the grave of Sayyiduna Hamzah radi Allahu anhu for blessing and would prostrate on it. This is a clear lie against the Companions. They were far removed from such idolatry. Then this poor man could not even attribute his lies to any well-known source of the Muslims, except that he mentioned (al-Ard wa al-Turbah al-Husayniyyah), which is a Shia book. (al-Sahihah: 1171) Further discussion can be seen in al-Sahihah.
