It is narrated from Nafi‘ that when some people withdrew from the allegiance to Yazid, Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called his sons and family members, bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and the Messengership, and then said: We have pledged allegiance to this Yazid for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: On the Day of Resurrection, a flag will be set up for the treacherous deceiver, and it will be said: This is the sign of so-and-so’s deception. The greatest deception and betrayal is not only associating partners with Allah, but also that a person pledges allegiance to someone for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and then breaks it. None of you should abandon Yazid’s side, nor look towards anyone else in the matter of caliphate and leadership, otherwise there will be a sword between him and me (meaning I will deal with him harshly).
