Hadith 12411

Abu Umayyah Amr bin Yahya bin Saeed says: I heard from my grandfather, who narrated that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, and after him, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) took charge of the ablution vessel and began to accompany the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with that vessel. One day, he was helping you (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, when you (peace and blessings be upon him) raised your blessed head towards him once or twice and said: "Muawiyah! If you are given authority, then always fear Allah and hold fast to justice." Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In view of this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I was certain that I would be tested in the matter of authority, and eventually, that is what happened.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This narration appears to be weak, but in the following blessed hadith, the two groups of Muslims mentioned—one was the group of Sayyiduna Hasan radi Allahu anhu and the other was the group of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu. Sayyiduna Hasan radi Allahu anhu announced his withdrawal in favor of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu, and in this way, the Muslim Ummah once again united upon a single ruler.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah radi Allahu anhu that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was delivering a sermon when Sayyiduna Hasan radi Allahu anhu arrived. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said about him: ((This son of mine is a leader, and perhaps Allah will bring reconciliation between two groups of Muslims through him.)) (Sahih Bukhari: 7109) This son of mine is a leader, and perhaps Allah, the Exalted, will bring about reconciliation between two groups of Muslims through him.

Thus, the prophecy of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was fulfilled, and when, after Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, Sayyiduna Hasan radi Allahu anhu was chosen as the caliph of the Muslims, he abdicated from his caliphate after six months and withdrew in favor of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu.
