Hadith 124

(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say «لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ», establish prayer, and pay zakat. In this way, their blood and wealth will become forbidden for me, and their reckoning will be with Allah, the Exalted."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There are three apparent signs of a person's being a Muslim:
(1) Bearing witness to the oneness of Allah (tawhid) and the messengership of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, (2) establishing prayer (salah), and (3) giving zakat (obligatory charity).

If the time for performing prayer (salah) and giving zakat has not yet arrived, then for someone to be considered a Muslim, the declaration of the two testimonies (shahadatayn) is sufficient, as is established from hadith number (126). Whoever wishes to safeguard his life and wealth from the Muslim ruler must adopt these three pillars; then his matter is entrusted to Allah, and we do not need to investigate whether he has truly become a Muslim inwardly or if his Islam is only outward. However, it is regrettable that, including the rulers, a large number of Muslims are heedless of the obligations of prayer (salah) and zakat, and for many, even the matter of tawhid is doubtful. We seek refuge with Allah (al-iyadhu billah).

Here, we are not engaging in the jurisprudential (fiqhi) discussion of which matters these three pillars entail, nor which further components and branches of Islam exist, the denial of which leads to disbelief (kufr).
