It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Alas! 'Ammar will be killed by a rebellious group. He will be calling them towards Paradise, but they will be calling him towards Hell." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna 'Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I seek refuge with the Most Merciful from tribulations."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Battle of Siffin took place between Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu and Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu. Although Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was upon the truth, yet along with Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu there was also a group of the noble Companions (sahabah kiram) in addition to the Tabi‘in. So, what would be the meaning of the Prophetic statement regarding them that they would be calling towards the Fire (Hell)? Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: The answer is that the army of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu thought that they were calling towards Paradise, and they were mujtahids (those exercising independent juristic reasoning) and were acting upon their own assumption, so they cannot be blamed. The meaning is that the group of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was calling their opponents towards the cause of Paradise, i.e., obedience to the Caliph, while obedience to the Caliph was obligatory, and the group of Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu was calling their opponents towards the opposite, i.e., rebellion against the Caliph. However, in light of their interpretation (ta’wil), they will be considered excused. (Fath al-Bari: 1/542)
In simple words, it can be said that rebellion is a crime, and every crime is a cause for Hell, but if the one rebelling, in light of his ijtihad (independent reasoning) and interpretation (ta’wil), considers his rebellion to be correct, then he will be excused, and regarding him it will only be said that he made a mistake.
