Hadith 12315

It is narrated from Musa Jahni, he says: I went to Fatimah bint Ali, my companion Abu Sahl asked her: How old are you? She said: Eighty-six years. Abu Sahl asked: What have you heard about your father (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him)? She said: Sayyidah Asma bint Umais, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Your position to me is like that of Harun (Aaron) to Musa (Moses), except that there is no prophet after me."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … These ahadith do not necessitate the absolute superiority of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu; rather, in these narrations, a particular virtue of the fourth caliph is mentioned. Nor do these ahadith mean that Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu would be the immediate caliph (khalifah bila fasl), because the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pertains to the occasion when, at the time of the expedition of Tabuk, he appointed him as his deputy in Madinah. Reflect yourself: Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu is being likened to Harun alayhis salam, whereas, according to the historians, Harun alayhis salam passed away during the lifetime of Musa alayhis salam, and Musa alayhis salam had appointed him as his deputy when he went to privately converse with his Lord.

In summary, just as the succession (istikhlaaf) of Harun alayhis salam was temporary, likewise, the deputization of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu pertained to those fifty days during which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not present in Madinah al-Munawwarah.
