It is narrated from Ma’bad bin Abi Talhah Ya’mari, he says: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood on the pulpit on Friday, praised and glorified Allah Almighty. After that, he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and then said: I have seen a dream, and in my opinion, its interpretation is that now the time of my death is near. I saw that a red rooster pecked me twice. When I narrated this dream before Sayyida Asma bint Umais, the wife of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), she said that some non-Arab man will kill Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: People tell me that I should appoint someone as my successor. Remember, Allah will not let go to waste the religion and caliphate with which He sent His Prophet. If my death comes soon, then this is a council of six persons. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was pleased with all of them. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey him. I know well that some people will criticize and object in this matter. With these very hands of mine, I have fought against such people for Islam. Such people are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided. By Allah! Of the commands my Lord has given me and made me caliph, I am not leaving behind anything more important than the matter of kalalah. By Allah! Since I have been in the company of the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he never spoke to me as sternly about any matter as he did about kalalah. Until he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his blessed finger on my chest and said: For this matter, the last verse of Surah An-Nisa, which was revealed in summer, is sufficient for you. If I remain alive, I will make such a decision about this issue that both the literate and illiterate will know it well. I make Allah a witness regarding the governors and representatives I have sent to various regions, that I sent them so that they may teach people the religion and teach them the Sunnah of the Prophet, and if any matter is not clear to them, they should bring it to me. O people! You eat two plants, that is, garlic and onion. I consider them extremely disliked. By Allah! I used to see the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he would smell their odor from someone, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would order regarding that person, and he would be taken out of the mosque and sent towards the Baqi’ graveyard. Whoever must eat these plants should cook them well. Ma’bad says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this address to the people on Friday, and on Wednesday he was attacked.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Mughirah ibn Shu'bah radi Allahu anhu had a Persian slave named Firoz, whose kunyah was Abu Lu'lu. He complained to Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu about the heavy tribute his master had imposed upon him. Since the complaint was unjustified, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu did not pay attention to it. Upon this, he became so enraged that he suddenly attacked during the morning prayer with a dagger and struck repeatedly six times. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu fell from the shock of the wounds, and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman ibn Awf radi Allahu anhu led the prayer.
This was such a fatal wound that he could not survive it, and after being ill for three days, on the first of Muharram, Saturday, in the year 24 Hijri, he passed away and forever went to sweet sleep beside his beloved master, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu had proposed the names of these six personalities for the position of caliphate: Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Uthman, Sayyiduna Zubair, Sayyiduna Talhah, Sayyiduna Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman ibn Awf. Whichever of them the remaining five agreed upon, he should be selected for this position.
