It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon at the place of Jabiyah and said in it: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us just as I am standing among you, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I urge you to treat my companions well, and I advise you to show kindness to those who come after them, and then to those who come after them. After these times, lying will become widespread, to the extent that a man will begin to give testimony before he is asked for it. So whoever among you wishes to secure a place in the middle of Paradise, let him remain with the congregation, for the devil is with the solitary person, and he is farther from two people who are together. And none of you should be alone with a woman, for the third among them will be the devil. Also, when a man's good deed pleases him and his bad deed displeases him, then he is a believer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the blessed hadith, attention has been drawn to five important issues:
1. To deal with the noble Companions (Sahabah), the eminent Followers (Tabi‘in), and the Followers of the Followers (Taba‘ Tabi‘in) with good conduct. These personalities of the earliest generations supported Islam; those who came later can never forget their favors. However, it is astonishing that in the present age, some organizations, ignoring the virtues of the Companions, highlight their human shortcomings and engage in criticizing, reviling, and abusing them. We do not understand what their purpose and objective is, and what they want. We do not claim that the Companions were infallible (ma‘sum), but we certainly say that their words and actions were of the highest order. They were the first to become the helpers and supporters of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and became the means for spreading Islam to the corners of the world. Therefore, we should keep their positive aspects in view and consider ourselves indebted to them.
2. The prevalence of swearing oaths and giving testimony indicates the commonness of lying; otherwise, truthful witnesses are not being negated. Even today, in courts and tribunals, some people, like agents, roam about ready to give false testimony for three or four hundred rupees. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A person continues to lie until he is written with Allah as a liar and a false one.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
3. To adhere to the congregation (jama‘ah), because the devil (Shaytan) can easily mislead a person who is alone.
4. No man can be alone in seclusion (khalwah) with a non-mahram woman. Nowadays, immodesty and the mixing of non-mahram men and women is common; some consider it an act of love, and some see it as a requirement of kinship. In any case, the temperament of the Shari‘ah does not permit such matters at all.
5. Feeling a wave of happiness in one’s temperament upon doing good, and feeling constriction upon doing evil, is a great sign of faith (iman) and certainty (yaqin). If a person does not feel happiness after doing good, nor grief after doing evil, then he should understand that his faith has become rusted; he should seek forgiveness (istighfar) and renew his faith.
