Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw people in a dream, they were coming before me, they were wearing shirts, some shirts reached up to their chests and some below that. When Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed before me, his shirt (because of its length) was dragging on the ground. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! How did you interpret this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Religion.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, according to the testimony of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, was fully adorned with the religion of Islam. The implication is that the period of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu’s caliphate would be long, during which the religion would be elevated, and the effects of his conquests would remain both during his life and after his death. The meaning of the shirt dragging is that after his passing, his beautiful traces and good practices (sunna hasana) would remain among the Muslims. (Summary from Mirqat al-Mafatih: 10/393)

Whereas Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: The reasoning for interpreting the shirt as representing religion is that a shirt is a means of covering in this world, and religion will be a means of covering in the Hereafter and will protect the servant from every kind of detestable thing. The basis for this is Allah the Exalted’s statement: {وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوٰی ذَالِکَ خَیْرٌ} “And the garment of taqwa (piety), that is best.” (Surah al-A’raf: 26) The Arabs use the shirt as an expression for virtue and chastity, as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu: ((Indeed, Allah will soon clothe you with a shirt, so do not remove it.)) (Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah) (Here, the shirt refers to the caliphate). (Fath al-Bari: 12/396) And Ibn Arabi said: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam interpreted the shirt he saw in his dream as religion, because clothing covers the private parts of the body, and religion covers the defects of ignorance.
