It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) in the morning and said to him: O Bilal! By virtue of which deed are you preceding me in Paradise? Whenever I entered Paradise, I heard the sound of your footsteps ahead of me. Last night, when I entered Paradise, I heard your same voice, then I reached a lofty palace made of gold. I inquired: Whose palace is this? They said: It belongs to an Arab man. I said: I am also an Arab, whose palace is this? They informed me that it is for a man from the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: I am Muhammad, tell me whose palace this is? They said: It is Umar ibn al-Khattab’s. Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umar! If it were not for your sense of honor, I would have entered the palace. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I cannot have any sense of honor over you. Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): By virtue of which deed are you preceding me in Paradise? He replied: Whenever I become impure, I perform ablution and offer two rak‘ahs (of Tahiyyat al-Wudu). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is because of this deed.
