عَنْ قَيْسٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَبِيَدِهِ عَسِيبُ نَخْلٍ وَهُوَ يُجْلِسُ النَّاسَ يَقُولُ اسْمَعُوا لِقَوْلِ خَلِيفَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ مَوْلًى لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ شَدِيدٌ بِصَحِيفَةٍ فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَقُولُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ اسْمَعُوا وَأَطِيعُوا لِمَا فِي هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا أَلَوْتُكُمْ قَالَ قَيْسٌ فَرَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ
It is narrated from Qais, he says: I saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he had a branch of a date palm in his hand, he was making people sit and saying: Listen to the words of the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then a servant of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), whose name was Shadid, came with a written document and he read that document before the people. He said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whatever is in this document, listen to it and accept it. By Allah! I have not been negligent in your right. Qais says: After that, I saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the pulpit.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was afflicted with the illness of death, by his order, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu continued to perform the duties of leading the prayer (imamate). Then, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu consulted with the eminent Companions during his lifetime and appointed Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu as his successor (khalifah).
