It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to me regarding the battle of Yamama, in which many Muslims were martyred. At that time, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present with him. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has come to me and informed me that there was a fierce battle at Yamama and many noble reciters among the Muslims have been martyred. I fear that if the reciters continue to be martyred in battles like this, a large portion of the Noble Qur’an will be lost, which has not been preserved. I think you should issue an order to collect the Noble Qur’an together in one place. I said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): How can I do something which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do? He said: By Allah! This is a good deed. He continued to insist with me about this matter until Allah opened my chest for this task and my opinion also became the same as that of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there, but he did not say anything. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Zaid! You are a wise young man, and we do not accuse you in any matter. You used to write down revelation by the order of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so now you should collect it in one place. Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: If they had ordered me to move a mountain from one place to another, it would not have been as difficult for me as the order to collect the Qur’an in one place. I also said to them: Why are you doing something which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do?

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Further ahead, in the narration of Sahih Bukhari, this detail is mentioned:

He said: “By Allah, it is good.” So Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu continued to insist with me until Allah opened my chest for that which He had opened the chests of Abu Bakr and Umar radi Allahu anhuma. Thus, I began to collect the Qur’an from palm branches, flat stones, and the hearts of men, until I found the last verse of Surah al-Tawbah only with Abu Khuzaymah al-Ansari, which I did not find with anyone else, and that verse was: {لَقَدْ جَا ئَ کُمْ رَسُوْلٌ مِّنْ اَنْفُسِکُمْ عَزِیْزٌ عَلَیْہِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِیْصٌ عَلَیْکُمْ بِالْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ رَء ُوْفٌ رَّحِیْمٌ۔} (Surah al-Tawbah: 128), until the end of Surah al-Tawbah. Then these pages remained with Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu until Allah caused him to die, then with Umar radi Allahu anhu during his lifetime, then with Hafsah bint Umar radi Allahu anha.

Although the Noble Qur’an, during the blessed era of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, was written on palm branches, bones, leather, stone tablets, and various other things, and its verses and surahs were arranged, however, it was not in the form of a book between two covers. Allah Ta’ala destined this achievement for Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu.
