عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ خُطَبَاءُ الْأَنْصَارِ فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَعْمَلَ رَجُلًا مِنْكُمْ قَرَنَ مَعَهُ رَجُلًا مِنَّا فَنَرَى أَنْ يَلِيَ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ رَجُلَانِ أَحَدُهُمَا مِنْكُمْ وَالْآخَرُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَتَتَابَعَتْ خُطَبَاءُ الْأَنْصَارِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَقَامَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَإِنَّمَا الْإِمَامُ يَكُونُ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَنَحْنُ أَنْصَارُهُ كَمَا كُنَّا أَنْصَارَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ جَزَاكُمُ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا مِنْ حَيٍّ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَثَبَّتَ قَائِلَكُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ فَعَلْتُمْ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ لَمَا صَالَحْنَاكُمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, some of the orators and speakers among the Ansar stood up. Among them, some said: O group of Muhajirin! Whenever the Messenger of Allah appointed someone from among you as an official, he would also appoint one man from among us with him. Therefore, our opinion is that there should be two rulers: one from among you and one from among us. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: All the Ansari speakers repeated this statement. Then Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was from among the Muhajirin, therefore the Imam and ruler will also be from among the Muhajirin, and we will be his Ansar and helpers just as we were the Ansar of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O group of Ansar! May Allah reward your tribe with goodness and always keep the one who gave this suggestion steadfast on the straight path. Then he said: By Allah! If you had suggested anything contrary to this, we would not have agreed with you.
