. (Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with his final illness, he said: "Call Abu Bakr and his son to me, so that no one greedy for Abu Bakr's matter may covet it, and no one desiring this affair may desire it." He said this statement twice, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty and the Muslims have refused this matter (except for Abu Bakr)." Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Allah and the Muslims have refused this matter for the people, except for my father, and then my father became the caliph."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The following is an authentic narration related to this subject:
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha, she says: “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to me on the day when his illness began. I said, ‘Oh, my head!’ The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘I wish that had happened while I was still alive, so I could prepare you (for burial), pray for your forgiveness, and bury you.’ I, out of jealousy, said: ‘It is as if I can see you on that day, secluded with one of your wives.’ He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then said: ‘Rather, I myself am saying, “Oh, my head!” because of the pain. Call your father and your brother to me, so that I may write a document in favor of Abu Bakr, for I fear that someone will say (something), and someone who desires (leadership) will wish for it, (saying) “I am more deserving,” but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the believers will refuse anyone except Abu Bakr.’” (Sahih Bukhari: 5666, 7217; Sahih Muslim: 2387; and the wording is from Ahmad)
These narrations are conclusive proof that the first caliph (khalifah) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is none other than our master Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu. And this is exactly what happened in practice: after the passing of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in the Saqifah of Banu Sa’idah, our master Umar radi Allahu anhu, the people of authority and decision, and then all the Muslims pledged allegiance to our master Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu. This is clear evidence of the caliphate of our master Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu.
Even if the caliphate of our master Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu had not been established by any Shari’ah (Islamic law) proof, the consensus and agreement of the noble Companions (Sahabah) would have been sufficient to establish the legitimacy of his caliphate. See also Hadith number (10994).
