Hadith 12155

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out during the days of his final illness with a band tied around his head and appeared on the pulpit. He praised and glorified Allah Almighty and then said: Among my life and wealth, no one has been a greater benefactor to me than Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa. If I were to take anyone from among the people as my close friend (khalil), I would have taken Abu Bakr as my khalil. However, Islamic brotherhood and relationship is the most virtuous of all. Close every door and path leading to this mosque except the path of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); let that remain open.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This address of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took place five days before his passing, and it was his last public address. See (10990)

SubhanAllah! What can be said of the fortune, destiny, and blessedness of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu, that the Prophet of Islam, the leader of all Prophets, just a few days before his death, acknowledged his unparalleled favors and gave glad tidings of love for him—this is a unique and unmatched eulogy for as-Siddiq al-Akbar radi Allahu anhu, in which he has no equal.

It should be remembered that "Khalil" refers to that lover who harbors such true and deep love for his beloved in his heart that there remains no room for anyone else. Such love is called "khullah," and this manner of love can only be adopted regarding Allah Ta'ala. The meaning of the hadith is that the intense love (i.e., khullah) that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had for Allah Ta'ala was not the same as that for Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, because the rank and status of as-Siddiq is established in its own right, but the Being of Allah Ta'ala is the most exalted and supreme; no one can be compared to Him. Yes, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, maintained the claim of Islamic affection and love for Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, whose rank is less than khullah. (Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has mentioned nine meanings of "Khalil." See: Fath al-Bari, under hadith 3657)

Khatabi, Ibn Battal, and others have said: In this hadith, Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu has been granted a great distinction; furthermore, there is a strong indication in it that Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu is deserving of the caliphate… and some have even claimed that the mention of the door is an allusion to the caliphate. (See: Fath al-Bari, under hadith 3654)

The practical lesson we derive from this blessed hadith is that the standard for love and affection, respect and honor, dignity and status, and friendship and companionship should be Islam; the foundation of the relationship between the lover and the beloved should be the name of Allah and His Messenger. This is the only relationship that will remain intact on the Day of Resurrection. As for that friendship whose foundation is some familial relation, worldly benefit, political connection, beauty and charm, personality cult, or sin and transgression, it will don the garb of enmity on the Day of Resurrection. The Noble Qur’an proclaims:

{اَ لْاَخِلَّائُ یَوْمَئِذٍ بَعْضُھُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ اِلَّا الْمُتَّقِیْنَ} … On the Day of Resurrection, close friends will become enemies to one another, except for the righteous (whose friendship is based on religion and the pleasure of Allah). (Surah az-Zukhruf: 67)

Let us also examine ourselves and establish the edifice of our relationships on the foundations of the love of the Prophet and as-Siddiq. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Whoever possesses the following three qualities will taste the sweetness and delight of faith because of them:

1. Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else in the universe.
2. He loves a person only for the sake of Allah Ta'ala.
3. By Allah’s grace, after being saved from disbelief, he abhors returning to disbelief as much as he would abhor being thrown into the fire. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 16, Sahih Muslim: 43)

Also, it is narrated from our master Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((INNA ALLAHA YAQULU YAWMA AL-QIYAMAH: AYN AL-MUTAHABBOONA BIJALALI, AL-YAWMA UZILLUHUM FI ZILLI YAWMA LA ZILLA ILLA ZILLI)) That is: Allah Ta'ala will announce on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who loved one another for My Majesty? Today, there is no shade except My shade, but I will grant them a place in My shade. (Sahih Muslim: 1031)
