It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever dies in such a state that he did not consider obedience to any Imam obligatory upon himself, that is, he did not accept anyone as his Imam, he died the death of ignorance. And whoever removes the necklace of obedience to an Imam from his neck, he will meet Allah in such a state that he will have no argument to present before Allah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … If there exists a congregation of Muslims, then joining it and accepting its ruler as one's leader and obeying him is obligatory. However, in the present era, the unity of the people of Islam has been shattered. The nation that once flourished under adherence to laws and regulations has now become completely unfamiliar with organization and administration. So, to Allah is the complaint.
Imam al-Albani rahimahullah writes: You should know that the warning mentioned in this hadith is regarding the person who has not pledged allegiance (bay‘ah) to the caliph of the Muslims and has separated himself from them. This does not refer to the various types of organizations and groups of the present age and their leaders, that allegiance should be pledged to them; rather, this is divisiveness, which the Noble Qur’an has prohibited.
