Hadith 12132

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever honors the king appointed by Allah in this world, Allah will honor him on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever humiliates and disgraces the king appointed by Allah in this world, Allah will disgrace and dishonor him on the Day of Resurrection.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The honor and dishonor of a king hold greater significance compared to the honor and dishonor of an ordinary person; every person of dignity feels this. Therefore, the attitude adopted with rulers should not be the same as that adopted with the general public. Consider the following example of this kind:

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Overlook the slips of those of dignified appearance, except in the case of the prescribed punishments (hudud).” (Abu Dawud: 4375, Sahihah: 638)

Every society in the world that has even the slightest connection with civilization and refinement looks upon the dignified, noble-natured, and those who keep away from vices with respect, and is seen overlooking their minor mistakes and lapses. This is because the purpose of the Shariah is to provide training (tarbiyah); for training, it is not necessary to always resort to rebuke or punishment (ta’zir), because for some people of status, it is sufficient to make them feel ashamed and to protect them from such crimes in the future that their fault becomes known to people, whereas for ordinary people, this principle alone is not sufficient for admonition.

In this blessed hadith, attention is drawn to appreciating this very moral virtue. However, if the nature of the crime reaches the violation of the limits set by Allah (hudud Allah), then the law of equality applies to everyone.
