Dawud bin Abi Salih says that one day Marwan came and saw a man who had placed his face upon the grave. Marwan said: Do you know what you are doing? When he turned towards him, he saw that it was Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub. So he said: Yes, I know. I have come to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, not to a stone. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: When the heirs and inheritors of the religion are worthy and deserving people, then do not weep for the religion. However, weep for the religion when unworthy people become its heirs and owners.
