Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said to me: O Abdur Rahman! Do not seek leadership or responsibility. If leadership is given to you after you have sought it, you will be left to it (without divine help), but if it is given to you without your seeking it, you will be helped in it. And when you swear an oath about something, then later realize that doing otherwise is better, then do what is better and offer expiation for your oath.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Now, how will the problems of Islamic states and their inhabitants be solved, when those greedy for power pounce upon it in such a way as if people who have been hungry for weeks attack a dining spread?

When the entire system of the state is handed over to them, and the support and help of Allah Ta’ala is also not with them, then how will the problems of the common people be solved? Not just a single thread, but the entire fabric has become disordered.

However, it should be firmly understood that when the circumstances of the Muslims are not unfavorable, and there is a danger that more problems may arise in the future, then a person may request responsibility, whose intention is sincerely to serve the people of Islam and to support the sinking ship of the Muslim Ummah, while he also perceives within himself sufficient ability and competence. Just as Yusuf (alayhis salam) requested the ministry in order to deal with the prolonged famine and the problems arising from it. And the king said, “Bring him to me so that I may select him exclusively for myself.” Then when he spoke to him, he said, “Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trustworthy with us.” He said, “Appoint me over the storehouses of the land; indeed, I am a good keeper, knowledgeable.” (Surah Yusuf: 54, 55)
