It is narrated from Hasan that Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill and 'Ubaydullah bin Ziyad came to visit him. Sayyiduna Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you a hadith which I have not narrated before. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If Allah grants authority to any servant over a people, and he dies while deceiving his subjects, Allah will make Paradise forbidden for him. In another narration: He is of the people of Hell.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Fulfilling the rights of the subjects with equality is an extremely difficult task. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There is no man who is put in charge of ten people or more, except that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will bring him on the Day of Resurrection with his hand chained to his neck; his righteousness will free him, or his sin will destroy him. The beginning of (leadership) is blame, its middle is regret, and its end is disgrace on the Day of Resurrection.” (Musnad Ahmad: 5/267)

In any case, those who take on responsibilities are accountable before Allah, and successful is only the one who gives preference to the comfort of the people over his own peace.

Rulers should know that governance is not a means of luxury and amassing wealth, rather it is such a great responsibility that those who fulfill it will be very few.

The responsibilities of governance can be gauged from the biography of a great ruler like Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu.
