Hadith 12026

Imam Zuhri says that Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut’im was present with a Quraishi delegation at the court of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He narrated that news reached Muawiyah that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated this hadith: “Soon there will be a king from (the tribe of) Qahtan.” Upon hearing this, Muawiyah became angry, stood up, praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and said: “I have heard that some people narrate such things which are neither found in the Book of Allah nor transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). These people are extremely ignorant. Beware of such desires which mislead those who follow their whims. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘This (leadership) matter will remain among the Quraish as long as they uphold the religion. Allah Almighty will bring down on their faces anyone who opposes them.’”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam al-Albani rahimahullah writes: From the words of this hadith, مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ (“as long as they uphold the religion”), it is understood that as long as they preserve the religion, their leadership will remain. Its contrary meaning is that if they do not provide protection to the religion, then the caliphate will be taken away from them. Hafiz Ibn Hajar, while pointing to other ahadith indicating this subject in Fath al-Bari (13/117), writes in the commentary of this hadith:

The summary of all the ahadith is that the Quraysh were warned about the matters necessary for the survival of their leadership, but when they neglected them, the reins of the caliphate slipped from their hands. From here began the disgrace and the corruption of affairs; this was at the beginning of the Abbasid era of leadership. When further deterioration occurred, their slaves gained dominance over them, who did not even refrain from harming them. At that time, the status of the caliphs and rulers was no more than that of a child who is put under restriction; they became content with pleasures, and others were running the affairs of the state. The matter became grave when the Daylami people, residing in the vicinity of Azerbaijan, took control; they so restricted the authority of the caliph that nothing remained for him except delivering the sermon, and those who seized power by force divided the royal government among various provinces. Then, group after group continued to dominate, until all affairs of the state were taken away from the caliphs, and in some regions, nothing remained except the formal name of the caliphate.

I (al-Albani) say: Even today, the condition of the Muslim Ummah is similarly deteriorated, rather, it is even more severe, because today there is no caliph for the Muslims at all, neither in name nor in form. Most Islamic countries are dominated by Jews, communists, and hypocrites.

We ask Allah, the Exalted, to grant the Muslims the ability to consult each other in accordance with the Shari‘ah in their affairs, and to grant the rulers the ability to unite and establish a single state according to the Shari‘ah rulings, so that they may attain honor in this world and happiness in the Hereafter. If this does not happen, then we will become the embodiment of this verse: {اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَایُغَیِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتّٰی یَغَیِّرُوْا مَا بِاَنْفُسِھِمْ} (Surah al-Ra‘d: 11) … Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.

The explanation of this verse is given in this hadith: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “When you engage in ‘inah transactions, hold onto the tails of cattle, become content with agriculture, and abandon jihad in the way of Allah, Allah will impose humiliation upon you, and He will not remove it until you return to your religion.” (Sahihah: 11)

So, O Muslim rulers! And O Muslim subjects! Return to your religion. (Sahihah: 2856)
