(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Today a servant of Allah, Ashamah, has passed away. Rise and perform his funeral prayer. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up, led us in prayer, and performed his funeral prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The name of the ruler of Abyssinia, Najashi, was Ashamah, and he had become a Muslim, although he did not meet the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He greatly assisted the Muslims in his country and allowed them to live there in peace and security. On the day of his death, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed the noble Companions of his passing and performed the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for him. Fundamentally, this very incident is the evidence for the legitimacy of the absentee funeral prayer (salat al-janazah al-gha'ib).
This was a miracle of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he came to know of the death that occurred in Abyssinia on the very same day. The title of the king of Abyssinia was Najashi. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: The apparent matter is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to the funeral ground or the Eid ground to perform the funeral prayer for Najashi so that a large number of Muslims would gather, and so that it would become well-known that he had died upon Islam, because some people were not even aware of his having become Muslim. Ibn Abi Hatim has narrated in his Tafsir, and Daraqutni in his Afrad, the narration that Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu said: When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led the funeral prayer for Najashi, a Companion said: “You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam have performed the funeral prayer for a man from Abyssinia.” At that time, this verse was revealed: {وَاِنَّمِنْاَھْلِالْکِتَابِلَمَنْیُّؤْمِنُبِاللّٰہِوَمَاأُنْزِلَاِلَیْکُمْوَمَااُنْزِلَاِلَیْہِمْخٰشِعِیْنَلِلّٰہِلَایَشْتَرُوْنَبِآیَاتِاللّٰہِثَمَنًاقَلِیْلًااُولٰٓـئِکَلَہُمْاَجْرُھُمْعِنْدَرَبِّہِمْاِنَّاللّٰہَسَرِیْعُالْحِسَابِ} (Surah Aal Imran: 199), meaning: “Indeed, among the People of the Book are those who believe in Allah and in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed to them, being humble before Allah, and they do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.” There are also supporting narrations for this in al-Mu’jam al-Kabir and al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, and in the latter’s narration, there is the additional detail that the one who objected was a hypocrite.
