Hadith 120

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: “O Messenger of Allah! My father used to maintain ties of kinship and also performed many other good deeds. Will he receive their reward?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, that which your father sought (in the form of fame and praise), he has already received.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hatim Tai’s intention was not for the sake of Allah Ta’ala, rather he sought fame and praise, and this is something he attained both in his lifetime and after his death. After accepting the religion of Islam, it is extremely necessary to develop sincerity (ikhlas) in one’s actions and words; otherwise, not only are good deeds rendered void, but they also become a source of distress.
