Hadith 11944

It is narrated from Abu Bakhtari that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that you are the trustworthy one of this Ummah, that is, an extremely reliable man." So Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "How can I go ahead of the man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to lead us in prayer, and then he led us in prayer until his death?"

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The one intended by Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah radi Allahu anhu was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, whom the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had instructed during his final illness to lead the people in prayer (imamate).

This narration, however, is weak. At Saqifah Banu Sa'idah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu had presented the opinion that allegiance (bay'ah) should be given to either Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu or Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah radi Allahu anhu. But in response, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu himself gave his opinion in favor of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and pledged allegiance to him; after him, the people began to pledge allegiance to him as well.
