Hadith 11940

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) used to fast frequently during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). But when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, after that he would only miss a fast due to travel or illness.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is noteworthy that in the narration of Sahih Bukhari, the initial words of this narration are: "Kana Abu Talhah la yasumu ‘ala ‘ahd al-nabiyyi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam min ajl al-ghazw." (Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu did not fast during the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam due to military expeditions). From this narration, it is understood that the words in this hadith of Musnad Ahmad, "yukthiru," were actually "la yukthiru," with "la" having been omitted; that is, Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu, due to his involvement in jihad during the Prophetic era, did not fast frequently.
