Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) saw in a dream that he was writing Surah Sad. When he reached the verse of prostration, he saw that the inkwell, pen, and everything near him had fallen into the state of prostration. Then, when he related this dream to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to perform prostration in it.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Surah Sad, the verse of prostration refers to this verse: {وَظَنَّ دَاودُ اَنَّمَا فَتَنَّاہُ فَاسْتَغْفَر رَبَّہٗوَخَرَّرَاِکِعاًوَاَنَابَ} (Surah Sad: 64)
This narration is disconnected (munqati‘), but the following two narrations related to this subject are authentic:
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu says: "I saw in a dream as if I was under a tree, and the tree was reciting Surah Sad. When it reached the verse of prostration, it performed the prostration of recitation (sajdat al-tilawah), and in its prostration it supplicated: 'O Allah! Record for me a reward for this, remove from me a sin because of it, grant me anew the ability to be grateful through it, and accept it from me just as You accepted the prostration of Your servant Dawud (alayhis salam).' When morning came, I went to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and informed him of this. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: 'Did you prostrate, O Abu Sa‘id?' I said: 'No.' He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: 'You were more deserving of prostration than the tree.' Then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited Surah Sad until he reached the verse of prostration, and in his prostration he said what the tree had said in its prostration." (Musnad Abu Ya‘la: 1/298, al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat: no. 4904, al-Sahihah: 2710)
From Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu: "Surah al-Najm was written in the presence of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When he reached the verse of prostration, he prostrated, and we prostrated with him, and the inkwell and the pen also prostrated." (Musnad al-Bazzar: 1/360/753, al-Sahihah: 3035)
In reality, every thing in the universe prostrates before Allah ta‘ala and declares His praise and glory, as Allah ta‘ala says: {وَلِلّٰہِ یَسْجُدُ مَا فِی السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الْاَرْضِ} (Surah al-Nahl: 49) … "Whatever is in the heavens and the earth prostrates to Allah ta‘ala."
"Everything glorifies Him with His praise, but you do not understand their glorification."
All the creatures that are before man, he cannot comprehend the manner of their worship; sometimes Allah ta‘ala shows this miraculously, as is evident from these ahadith.
