It is narrated from Abu Nofal bin Abi Aqrab that at the time of death, a state of anxiety overcame Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son Abdullah saw his condition, he said: O Abu Abdullah! What is this anxiety and distress? You held such a status that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep you close to him and would appoint you as governor over various regions. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My son! All this did happen, let me tell you about it. By Allah! I do not know whether his relationship with me was based on love or for the sake of winning my heart. However, I bear witness that there were two men whom Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to love until he departed from this world. One was Ibn Sumayyah and the other was Ibn Umm Abd (that is, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with them both). While Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying these things to his son, he had placed his hand on the end of his chin and said: O Allah! (We are sinners) You gave us commands, but we did not care for them, and You forbade us from many things, yet we committed them. We are only hopeful and seekers of Your forgiveness. Saying this, and in this very state, he passed away.
