Hadith 11836

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that an Ansari made a sarcastic remark about the father of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had died during the time of ignorance. Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), in anger, slapped him. The people of the Ansari’s tribe came and said: By Allah, just as he has slapped, we will certainly slap him in retaliation. They came armed with weapons. When this matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he ascended the pulpit and said: O people! Who is the most honorable person in the sight of Allah among the people on the face of the earth? The people said: You are. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then Abbas is from me and I am from Abbas. Do not hurt our living ones by speaking ill of our deceased ones. Then those people came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), apologized, and said: O Messenger of Allah! We seek Allah’s refuge from your anger and displeasure.
