Hadith 11835

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said regarding Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): This is Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, who is the most generous (i.e., charitable) among the Quraysh and excels the most in maintaining ties of kinship.

He was two or three years older than the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Before Islam, he was a chief of the Quraysh. The management of Masjid al-Haram and the responsibility of providing water to the pilgrims was entrusted to him. At the time of the Pledge of Aqabah, when the Ansar pledged allegiance to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Abbas radi Allahu anhu was also present there for the sake of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In the Battle of Badr, he was compelled to participate on the side of the disbelievers and was captured. His two nephews, Aqil bin Abi Talib and Nawfal bin Harith, were also taken captive. Sayyiduna Abbas radi Allahu anhu paid the ransom for himself and his two nephews, went to Makkah, and accepted Islam. Before the conquest of Makkah, he migrated to Madinah Munawwarah and participated in the Conquest of Makkah and the Battle of Hunayn.
