Hadith 11817

(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: No man had more knowledge of hadith than me except Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the reason for this was that he used to write down the hadith, and I did not write.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these two hadiths, it is understood that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhu had memorized more hadiths than Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, even though the number of hadiths narrated from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu is 5,374, and this number is many times greater than those narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu. The reasons for this could be as follows:

1. Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu was more engaged in worship than in teaching.
2. After the conquests, his residence was mostly in Egypt or Ta’if, whereas at that time, students did not tend to travel to those regions.
3. Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu was also distinguished by the special supplication (du‘a) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
4. Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu had acquired several books of the People of the Book in Syria; he would study them and narrate from them as well, so the Tabi‘in refrained from taking narrations from him.

Whereas Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu remained engaged in teaching and issuing legal verdicts (fatwa), and for this reason, more than eight hundred Tabi‘in acquired knowledge from him.
